SPEAKERS

ALBERTO ALONSO DIAZ

A Chemistry graduate, Alberto Alonso is an advisor to the Office for Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Spanish Embassy in China and is accredited in both China and Mongolia. He previously held the same post in Denmark and was also accredited in Sweden, Norway and Finland. Alonso has been a consultant at the International Trade Centre in Geneva (ITC-WTO) in the fields of analysis, monitoring and technical assistance on food and beverages and was also the Spanish representative for the Ministry of Commerce on the ECE/Codex experts committee on the normalisation of fruit juices in the 16th, 17th and 18th meetings held in Geneva and Rome, among others.

DANNY BRAGER

Danny Brager, an Honours graduate in Business Administration from the University of Toronto, heads the Alcoholic Beverages Department at Nielsen in the USA and his team collects information and opinions from the wine, beer and spirits sectors. With over 9 years’ experience in the alcoholic beverages industry and more than 30 years working for Nielsen in Canada and the United States, Brager is an expert in marketing and market positioning, as well as in packaging and working with distributors.

JOSÉ EDUARDO JORGE EIRAS DIAS

An agricultural engineer, Eiras is a member of the Portuguese National Institute of Agronomic Research, a scientific supervisor at the National Institute of Agrarian Research and head of the Ampelographic Collection of Portugal. He is also an official delegate of the OIV expert group for grape selection and belongs to the “Vitis Working Group” European Cooperative Programme for Crop Genetic Resources Networks (ECP/GR Fruit Network). He is currently participating in a number of European research projects on the genetics of the vine and wine and has published several studies in specialist journals.

ROBERTO FERRARINI

A graduate in agricultural engineering from the University of Bologna, Ferrarini has taught courses on Oenology in a number of Italian universities. He currently teaches at the Department of Science, Technology and Marketing of the Vine and Wine at the University of Verona as well as being a member of the Italian Academy of the Vine and Wine and part of the Italian delegation of experts at the OIV (“Wine Technology”). Ferrarini is a member of the editorial board of the international publication “Journal of Wine Research” and the technical board of other publications such as “Vignevini” and “Corriere Vinicolo”. He is also in charge of a range of research projects and is the author of more than a hundred technical and scientific publications.

JOHN GILLESPIE

John Gillespie is one of the leading experts in the United States wine market. After starting his career over 30 years ago as a specialist journalist and working in the hospitality sector and in PR for a range of wineries, Gillespie is now head of the Wine Market Council and has also carried out several studies on the wine market. He is also head of the Bordeaux Wine Information Bureau and the founder of the consulting companies Wine Colleagues and Wine Opinions, which both focus on the consumer.

JAVIER GUILLÉN

A PhD in Law and a specialist in European Food and Beverages Law, Guillén has worked at the European Commission, Intercitrus and a number of professional legal practices in Brussels and Valencia. He is currently the General Counsel for the Valencian Regional Government’s Agriculture and Fisheries Commission and the Environment Commission and teaches at the Universidad Cardenal Herrera CEU and on the Master’s Course in Business Consulting at the Fundación de Estudios Bursátiles y Financieros. Guillén has published several articles and has given papers on wine law and the legal status of the regulations set by the Consejos Reguladores and other issues such as food security, GMOs, the environment and responsibility for faulty products.

CATHERINE LEPARMENTIER DAYOT

Catherine Leparmentier is in charge of the Development of International Tourism at the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry and is an expert in providing small and medium enterprises with export advice. Leparmentier promotes Bordeaux as a tourist destination in the main overseas markets and leads the “Cruise Bordeaux” project, a local association that has the aim of promoting Bordeaux as a stopover port in order to increase the number of ships that dock there. Furthermore, she was also in charge of organising the Great Wine Capitals Global Network in 1999, of which she is Secretary General.

MONTIANO MONTEAGUDO

Montiano Monteagudo is a partner at Uría Menéndez and works at the firm’s Barcelona office. Monteagudo is an expert in intellectual property, unfair competition, competition law, obligations and contract law, information technology and corporate law. He gives legal advice and represents national and international companies before regulatory and legal bodies in proceedings relating to the protection of patents, trademarks, industrial models and drawings, copyright, know-how and other intellectual and industrial property rights. Monteagudo is also a Professor of Commercial Law at Barcelona’s Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

ANA NIETO CHURRUCA

Ana Nieto is an advisor on New Technologies for Global Marketing Strategies and co-author of the book Cómo dirigir una bodega (How to run a winery) and La web de Empresa 2.0 (The Company Website 2.0). This economist and marketing expert has also managed more than 100 web redesign projects in order to improve the sites’ effectiveness and has taken part in a range of conferences, seminars and presentations on Wine and Internet Sales in different forums. She currently heads the web portals www.globalnegotiator.com and www.webempresa20.com.

HERNÁN OJEDA

Hernán Ojeda is an agricultural engineer and has a PhD in Agricultural Science. He leads the Pech Rouge Experimental Unit at the National Institute of Agronomic Research in France. He is also a member of the science committee of GESCO (Groupe d’Etude des Systèmes de Conduite de la Vigne) and advises grape and wine companies in South America and Europe. Ojeda teaches international postgraduate courses in Argentina, Spain and France, he is the author of several publications in international journals and has given papers at a number of congresses. He was also awarded the Francisco Oreglia Prize for Vitiviniculture in Argentina for his innovative work in this field.

EMILIO ONTIVEROS BAEZA

A graduate and PhD in Economics, Ontiveros is a professor of Business Economics at the Universidad Autónoma in Madrid and the author of several books and numerous articles on economy and finance. Ontiveros also founded and is head of Analistas Financieros Internacional (AFI), a consulting group that includes the Escuela de Finanzas Aplicadas, Tecnología Información y Finanzas S. A., Consultores de las Administraciones Públicas S. A. and AFInet Global. He is editor of the Madrid Economists’ Association’s Economistas magazine and sits on several editorial boards for specialist publications. His most recent book is La economía en la red (The Economy on the Web), published by Taurus). He also advises a number of companies, foundations and institutions and has been awarded several prizes for his economic research.

JOSÉ LUIS PÉREZ MARÍN

José Luis Pérez Marín has a PhD in Agricultural Engineering and is currently the head of the Crop Protection Department at the Government of La Rioja’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural Development. He is one of the leading European authorities on fighting vine blights and diseases and currently works as the National Coordinator of the Vine Phytosanitary Problems Working Group.

PATRIZIA RESTANI

A graduate in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology from the University of Milan, specialising in Toxicology, Restani is an expert in food chemistry and food allergies. She is also a member of the Italian Delegation from the Ministry of Agriculture to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and is Vice President of the Organisation’s Health and Safety Commission. Patrizia Restani has worked with the Italian Ministry of Health on the analytical monitoring of food supplements that contain botanical ingredients and the Medicine Education Programme. She has also taught several courses and has written a number of publications relating to food.

RAFAEL DEL REY

Rafael Del Rey is the General Manager of the Spanish Wine Market Observatory (OEMV), a foundation created by the FEV (Spanish Wine Federation) with the support of sector institutions, in order to gather and disseminate information about wine markets, channels and consumers all over the world so as to support wineries in the commercialisation of their wines. Del Rey took on this position after having led ARBOR (Association of Rioja Craftsmen and Wine Producers), an association that included leading Rioja wineries, and after having represented FEV as Assembly General Manager. Del Rey has been part of the Consejo Regulador de Rioja and other institutions and was a speaker at the Spanish Congress Commission in charge of the Wine Law reform. He also gives advice to different winery associations in Spain.

IGNACIO SÁNCHEZ RECARTE

With a PhD in Agricultural Engineering, Sánchez Recarte heads the Economy and Legal Unit at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine and is head of the expert groups on Law and Consumer Information, Economic and Related Analysis, Markets and Consumption, Training, Grape Spirits, Sustainable Management Systems and Traceability and the Carbon Dioxide Balance. Recarte is an expert on climate change and its consequences, the adaptation of the grape and wine sector, and the effects of greenhouse gases and the carbon footprint on the vine and wine sector.

PIERRE-LOUIS TEISSEDRE

Pierre-Louis Teissedre is the Vice President of the Science and Technology Council of the French Institute of Vine and Wine and is Scientific Director of the European Institute of Wine, Health and Society in France. He is also on the science and technology board of the OIV groups on Wine Technology, Food Security and Consumption, Nutrition and Health. Teissedre has concentrated his research on grape and wine quality, sensory aspects and the interaction of polyphenols when making wine, the chemical analysis of grapes and wine, food security (contaminants) and health and nutrition and he has published a range of articles on these subjects.

JOSÉ LUIS TORQUEMADA

José Luis Torquemada is an expert in Marketing and Innovation and founder of the branding and packaging company La Cía. A graduate in Law with a Master’s degree in Sales Management and International Marketing, he also teaches classes at a business school. He was also a founding partner of Ideadvert – a project incubator for the sales and marketing sector – and Regio Sales & Services, a leading company in commercial outsourcing. Torquemada defines himself as someone who is “passionate about creation” and who has fun every day “by bringing together a complex system of designers, photographers, copywriters, executives, business people, clients, consumers, distributors, etc under the same brand and ensuring that that brand motivates them, helps them to sell, enjoy and sometimes even just smile.”

DANIEL RAMÓN VIDAL

Vidal is a Biology graduate and also has a PhD in the subject. He is an expert in genetics and industrial microorganisms and is currently Director of Science and CEO at the biotechnology company Biópolis SL, in which CSIC, Natraceutical SA, Corporación Alimentaria Peñasanta and Talde Capital Risk are all partners and whose technology findings are protected by national and international patents. Vidal has also published more than a hundred articles in prestigious international journals and has been awarded a range of prizes, such as the Spanish Microbiology Society Award, an award for his career in science from the Instituto Danone, the European Science Communication Award, the National Juan de la Cierva Research Award, the International Hippocrates Award (for Medical Research into Human Nutrition) and the García Cabrerizo Foundation Medal.

PAU ROCA BLASCO

Pau Roca is Secretary General of the Spanish Wine Federation (FEV), an organisation that represents 85% of the winemaking sector. With an extensive career in the wine and grape sector, Roca is also president of the Wine Common Market Organisation Reform Commission and is an advisor to the Permanent European Vine and Wine Group, as well as being the president of Establecimientos Félix Gasull and member of the board at Ecovidrio.

MAR ROMERO

A journalist specialising in food and wine, Mar Romero directs and presents the programme Mesa y Descanso on Punto Radio and writes the food section for several publications. She is also a partner in Imbolc, gastronomía, vinos y letras, a communications company that specialises in food and wine-related events. She has been a judge on several national food and wine contests, such as Iberwine, Bacchus or the Wine and Women Prize and has presented important events, such as the “Custodio López Zamarra” Sommeliers Trophy at Madrid Fusión. She is also a member of the Madrid Food and Wine Club, the Madrid Association of Sommeliers, the Spanish Tasters’ Union, the Spanish Association of Wine Journalists and Writers and the Spanish Association of Food Culture Writers and Journalists.

JEAN PHILIPPE ROBY

Jean Philippe Roby, an expert in vineyard restructuring, is a professor-researcher and head of the Viticulture and Oenology Training Unit at the National Agricultural Projects Engineering School in Bordeaux (ENITA). He is also head of Technology Transfer at the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences (ISVV) in Bordeaux.

LILLI PRUD’HOMME

Lilli Prud’Homme is the head of the department of Strategic Issues at Société des alcools du Quebec (SAQ), a state-owned retail corporation that is the biggest wine buyer in the world. She has worked at SAQ for 17 years. Prud’Homme is in charge of identifying and analysing market trends in the vine and wine industry that could have an impact on SAQ and the opportunities that allow the current position of wines on the market to be maintained.

GIANCARLO SCOTTÁ

Giancarlo Scotta is currently a member of the European Parliament’s Agricultural and Rural Development Committee and is a substitute member of the Environment, Public Health and Food Security Committee and the Rural Development Committee. He is also the honorary president of the Italian Association “Città del Vino”.

JUAN MANUEL TERCEÑO

Juanma Terceño works as the head of Wine Concept at Makro Spain and, along with the Purchaser Marta Modrego, leads the development of Makro Spain’s wine section, with a team of 37 sommeliers based in the company’s 34 points of sale and at the main headquarters. Terceño has a diploma in Tourism Companies and Activities from the UNED (Spanish Distance Learning University) and the Valladolid Tourism School, while his food and wine training was carried out at the Círculo del Vino Matritense in Madrid. He also has extensive experience as a sommelier and maître and as the head of Food and Beverages in several companies, as well as having spent time in retail distribution at Aldeasa, where he worked for 4 years.

REINHARD TÓPFER

An expert in Genetics and Plant Reproduction, Töpfer is head of the Institute for Grapevine Breeding at the Julios Künh Institute, which belongs to the Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants that is assigned to the German Ministry of Agriculture.

PAUL WAGNER

Paul Wagner is a founding partner of Balzac Communications & Marketing, whose portfolio of clients includes a broad range of organisations and companies specialising in food and beverages such as Constellation Wine US, Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, Vinos de Murcia, Reyno de Navarra, Vinitaly/Veronafiere, Castilla-La Mancha, Regione Sicilia, Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines, APCOR, Amorim & Irmaos, The Culinary Institute of America and White Rocket Wine Company. In the last ten years, Paul Wagner has taught at the Viticulture and Oenology department at Napa Valley College and is a guest professor at a number of universities. He recently published the book Wine Marketing & Sales, Strategies for a Saturated Market, with Liz Thach and Janeen Olson. He has also written several articles on the sector, has participated as a judge in many international tastings and is also a founding partner of the Academy of Wine Communications and a member of Spadarini della Castellania di Soave.

JESÚS ZORRILLA TORRAS

Jesús Zorrilla is an agricultural engineer and an expert in bilateral issues with Mercosur, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, China, India, the Mediterranean countries and the Balkans. After 4 years at the EU Directorate-General of Agriculture’s Oilseed Market Unit, he then worked for 15 years in the International Relations department and has been head of the Wine and Alcohol Unit since January 2010. He also worked for 6 years at the World Trade Organization (Geneva) as a European Commission delegate on agricultural issues.
